SAFETY:

Important Safety Issues Every Parent Should Know

For today's active child, bumps, bruises and an occasional scrape are all a part of growing up. As a parent, you've seen it all when it comes to your child's active lifestyle. There are enough hazards in the world today -the sports equipment your children play on shouldn't be one! At Huffy Sports Company, your child's safety is our biggest concern. That's why we develop products that apply the industry's most advanced technology to enhance product safety and performance. Cheap, weathered and aged basketball systems can present hidden dangers every parent should be aware of. Take a minute to answer the following five questions and see if your basketball system meets Huffy Sports safety standards:

1. Does your home basketball system's rim feature the QuickClip™ safety net release system that allows the net to release from the rim? This is an important safety element because today, basketball is played above the rim. The Quick Clip™ is a unique safety feature that allows the net to detach from the rim when an excessive amount of force is applied. With the use of the Quick Clip™, if hands, fingers or other body parts become entangled in the net, the net can release from the rim.

2. If you own a portable basketball system, does it meet acceptable standards for minimum pullover resistance? You may not know it, but some portable basketball systems can tip over when as little as 70 pounds of pullover force is applied to the rim. Aggressive, pro-style play and strong winds can play havoc on a system that doesn't provide adequate pullover protection. Be sure your portable system provides at least a minimum pullover resistance of 200 pounds. Look for a Stability Rating™ on the packaging prior to purchasing your next basketball system to ensure that it provides a level of stability, suitable for the conditions under which you will play.

3. Does your portable basketball system have a secondary restraint ground stake? To increase the stability of a portable basketball system, it's important that you use a secondary restraint ground stake. The ground stake secures to the back of the portable base and increases stability by anchoring to the ground. If you plan on buying a portable system, make sure it comes with a ground stake. Fill the portable with water or sand and use the ground stake for maximum unit stability.

4. If you have an in-ground basketball system, is it protected by a plastic ground sleeve? A plastic, non-corrosive ground sleeve helps protect an in-ground metal pole from elements that could cause corrosion. This is important because, over time, an in-ground pole can deteriorate from the elements. A ground sleeve will also make unit installation and removal easier, allowing the pole to slide in and out of its concrete casing. Don't pay extra for a ground sleeve, a quality in-ground system will include one. A metal ground sleeve has the potential to accelerate the rusting process, so a plastic non-corrosive ground sleeve is preferable

5. Does your home basketball system meet Huffy Sports safety standards? If not, you may be considering a new basketball system. Before you hit the store, take a moment to review Huffy Sports' guide to purchasing a new home basketball unit. The helpful guide offers the latest information on home basketball systems and is a great "carry along" reference when you're shopping for a new system.
